biography and artist statement
Biography
Mick Watson (b. 1979, Newcastle, UK) is an artist whose work explores the sensory and cognitive experience of attention, memory, and meaning.
His practice investigates what happens when memory becomes unclear, when synaptic activity connects seemingly disparate inputs, and when meaning is shaped through semiotic cues.
His work often references specific dates, locations, or emotional states - used as quiet anchors for otherwise indeterminate forms. Across paintings, prints, and installations, he constructs visual systems that feel fragmentary and unresolved, reflecting the structure of contemporary signals and platforms.
Artist Statement
My work translates the absence of mental imagery into visual systems, shaped by aphantasia and a background in creative direction. It draws on the signals and tropes of advertising, media, politics, and culture - disassembled, reframed, and recontextualised.
